Second Year Decline in Mesquite Crime; Police Attribute Residents’ Teamwork

For the second time in two years, the City of Mesquite reports a significant decrease in overall crime in the community. Police Chief David Gill presented the new statistics to the City Council on Monday, March 16. He said the Police Department’s collaboration with residents has been key to the decline.

According to the numbers:

  • 929 fewer crimes reported in 2025 than 2024
  • Represents a 4% reduction in violent crime
  • 20% reduction in property crime

Here are some of the most substantial reductions from 2024 to 2025:

  • Thefts down—from 2999—to 2539 and
  • Burglaries down—from 492—to 375.
  • Motor vehicle thefts down—from 902—to 574.

“These numbers represent a significant effort by the men and women of the Mesquite Police Department, and cooperation from residents—to proactively prevent and solve crimes,” said Chief Gill. “I am proud of the department’s efforts to utilize targeted enforcement and proactive patrols to be more present in the community. I also appreciate all citizens who participate in neighborhood and crime watch groups and contact the department when they observe suspicious activity.”

With the most significant decrease seen in motor vehicle thefts—cut nearly in half—Chief Gill attributes proactive residents, being more vigilant in securing their vehicles, and taking extra steps to prevent thefts. “Simple changes like double checking to lock your car and placing lights and cameras around your home make a tremendous impact on crime,” Chief Gill said. “Residents who take these proactive measures and talk to their neighbors on a regular basis are much less likely to be victims of crime.”

The Mesquite Police Department has also been diligent in solving several crimes involving Facebook Marketplace and counterfeit goods. In addition, the Department has taken considerable steps to address drug crimes as well as confiscating illegal firearms.
