Mesquite, TX – May 6, 2019 – Voters in Mesquite have approved a proposition to sell more than 171 acres of designated park land located outside Mesquite city limits and to use the proceeds for enhancing the City of Mesquite parks and recreation system. The final election results are:
FOR – 1,226 votes or 74.48%
AGAINST – 420 votes or 25.52%
Mesquite City Council is scheduled to canvass the election results of Proposition A on May 14, 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave.
City Manager Cliff Keheley said, “We are happy this proposition received voter approval. Once the property is sold, the Mesquite City Council will make the decision on the parks and recreation amenities they want to address with the use of the proceeds from the land sale.”
The property was designated as park land, and state law required voter approval for the sale of any property that is designated as park land by a city. This City-owned undeveloped property is located inside the city limits of Balch Springs. The City of Balch Springs currently has the property designated for residential development in its Future Land Use Plan portion of its Comprehensive Plan.
