Mesquite, TX - April 23, 2019 - The First Lady of Texas, Mrs. Cecilia Abbott, will visit Downtown Mesquite on May 16 as she leads a celebration of the designation of Mesquite as a Texas Main Street community. The public event will begin at 2 p.m. in Heritage Square, 223 W. Davis Street.
City of Mesquite Mayor Stan Pickett stated, “We are proud to be part of the Texas Main Street Program, and honored to welcome Mrs. Abbott to the heart of our community. The revitalization of Downtown Mesquite is a strategic goal for the City Council and this event is another achievement toward that goal.”
The “First Lady’s Tour” is a long-standing tradition of more than 30 years. Mrs. Abbott will speak on the importance of downtown revitalization and unveil an architectural rendering of a portion of Downtown Mesquite, featuring restored historic buildings and updated public spaces. A public reception will follow the ceremony.
“The First Lady’s visit is the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work,” said Mesquite Downtown Development Advisory Board Chairman Brad Brandt. “May 16 will be our day to celebrate accomplishments to date and look forward to the many successes to come.”
The downtown revitalization program has achieved many goals since its creation in 2018. In October, Mesquite was selected as a Texas Main Street community. A successful Small Business Saturday event followed in November, and December saw the debut of a new Downtown Mesquite signature brand. In addition, a downtown stakeholder group worked with consultants and City staff to create a plan for major infrastructure improvements. City Council approved the first phase of that plan, Front Street Station, a $6.7 million infrastructure project to serve as a catalyst for the revitalization process.
