Mesquite, TX – October 25, 2018 – It is official, Mesquite is a Texas Main Street City. Today, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) designated Mesquite as one of the new incoming 2019 official Texas Main Street cities. THC made the announcement today at their quarterly commission meeting in Laredo, Texas. Mesquite will officially enter the THC’s Texas Main Street Program on January 1, bringing the number of fully designated Main Street communities in Texas to 89.
City Manager Cliff Keheley said, “This is extremely exciting news. It is the culmination of a large amount of hard work and dedication. The City Council identified Downtown Mesquite as one of their top strategic goals. Through the efforts of City staff, citizen and business stakeholders, as well as the overall community, Mesquite has been able to achieve this important status.” Keheley explained that the Texas Main Street designation is a catalyst for the City to open up new doors of economic opportunities for Downtown Mesquite to attract businesses, plan new activities, promote heritage tourism and implement additional long-range initiatives to revitalize the area.
The Main Street Program stimulates private sector downtown reinvestment in historic downtowns. It helps retain, expand, and recruit small businesses, while also creating new jobs in Texas. The THC's Texas Main Street Program began in 1981 as one of the first state coordinating programs in the United States. Participating communities have generated more than $4.1 billion in overall reinvestment into their historic downtowns and created more than 40,000 jobs and 9,800 small businesses. Local Main Street programs receive a wide range of resources and expertise from the THC.
