Mesquite, TX – September 24, 2018 – On September 21, upon request of the City of Mesquite, the 162nd Judicial Court fully restricted the operation of the Meri Best Inn, 3629 E. U.S. Highway 80, until the owners bring the property into compliance with Mesquite City Code.
City Manager Cliff Keheley said, “Public Safety and Neighborhood Appearance & Condition are two of the Mesquite City Council’s top priorities. The 162nd Judicial District Court saw the evidence and supported our case to close this motel. This action was due to repeated building, health and safety code violations as well as the lack of response by the owners to address those violations. The Meri Best Inn has been on our T25 Task Force list for more than two years due to the continued violations present at that property.”
In March 2016, the City launched a new program to identify and address the properties in Mesquite with predominant code enforcement issues. The City Council approved the T25 Task Force as a tool to develop a unified strategy involving many City departments. Since beginning this program, Mesquite has seen improvement in some properties and has continued to take additional steps with the other non-compliant properties.
The Meri Best Inn previously was operating under a temporary injunction to address its code issues. However, after more than three months and failure to complete the necessary repairs, the City escalated the issue to the Court.
The Meri Best Inn may resume operations no earlier than October 16, after the owners bring the property into compliance and the Court holds a hearing date on the case.
