Mesquite, TX – October 6, 2021 – At the Oct. 4 council meeting, the Mesquite City Council approved an advanced funding agreement for the Lawson Road Highway Safety Program (HSIP) Project. This agreement will authorize funding and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) participation in the project. The city announced it had been awarded a state grant of $471,930 for the project in April.
The HSIP project will add a three-foot shoulder and guard rail on both sides of Lawson Road from 1,635 feet south of East Cartwright Road to 2,885 feet north of Milam Road. Appropriate side slopes will also be added from the edge of the new roadway. Construction will begin in 2022.
The TxDOT grant is part of the HSIP which funds projects to reduce the quantity and severity of traffic crashes on specific roadways. The city will fund the remaining $47,193 portion of the estimated construction costs not covered by the grant. HSIP is a federally funded program, that covers 90% of eligible project costs.
