Mesquite, TX – September 17, 2021 – On Sept. 11, the City held a dedication at the home of the future Jon Latimore Park, located on North Bryan Avenue. Jon Latimore Park is named in honor of the city’s first African American police officer.
The Latimore family and the local neighborhood enjoyed the dedication event with an afternoon of food, and the City received input from the public on future park amenities at the event. Officer Jon Latimore Park will include a playground, basketball court, open space and picnic tables.
Jon Latimore was hired in 1985 as the first African American Police Officer to serve in the Mesquite Police Department. On September 7, the Mesquite City Council approved a resolution naming the future park in his honor. For 28 years, Officer Latimore made a lasting impression on the community receiving numerous commendations from citizens and coworkers. Latimore retired in 2013 and passed away in 2018.
