Whether virtually or in person, Dallas College will showcase and honor the cultural richness of Hispanic and Latinx communities from Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean during Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme is: “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.”
The observation, which includes lectures, poetry readings and financial advice, kicks off Sept. 15.
Hispanic Heritage Month, previously known as Hispanic Heritage Week, was started under President Lyndon Johnson. President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to cover an entire month that ends on Oct. 15.
Among the highlighted events:
A Conversation with Maria Hinojosa
Tues., Sept. 28 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
An award-winning journalist, Hinojosa is the host and executive producer of Latino USA - a nationally syndicated public radio news and cultural program. Hinojosa will discuss the history of immigration in this country and reflect on her own journeys, both personal and professional.

The LatinX Experience in Professional Careers (Panel)
Tues., Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
A panel discussion with representatives from the Association of Latino Professionals for America, Hispanic National Bar Association, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and National Community College Hispanic Council explores topics on professionalism and career advancement for those identifying as members of the Hispanic/Latinx communities.

UndocuJoy: Shifting the Perspective in Undocumented Representation
Tues., Oct. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Nationally acclaimed poet, activist and author of “For Colored Boys Who Speak Softly,” Yosimar Reyes explores the resilience of undocumented people who exist beyond narratives about deportations.

El Peso Hero – a Latino Graphic Novel about everyday life at the US-Mexico border
Wed., Oct. 6 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Not your mainstream superhero, “El Peso Hero” is a neo-Western graphic novel influenced by modern-day challenges faced by residents on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Come meet creator Hector Rodriguez, a publisher, artist and teacher.
