Mesquite, TX – September 8, 2021 – The Mesquite Fire Department (MFD) participated in the Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Fountain Place in Downtown Dallas. MFD had 25 firefighters participating this year, the most out of the 101 fire departments represented. Ten different EMS departments and 40 different law enforcement departments also participated.
Each year, firefighters climb 110 flights of stairs, wearing full bunker gear and an air pack, representing the 110 floors of the World Trade Center. Each firefighter represents an individual firefighter who was killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and each firefighter carries the nametag of a fallen firefighter.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center site in New York, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania and in Washington, D.C at the Pentagon. The City of Mesquite will host a sunrise memorial to commemorate Patriot Day which is the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The public event will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Mesquite Freedom Park located at the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Avenue.
