Mesquite, TX – April 16, 2021 – The City of Mesquite announced it has been awarded a state grant of $400,000 for interim improvements to Lawson Road. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant will help fund 90% of the project that will add three more feet of road shoulder and a safety guardrail on both lanes of Lawson Road near East Cartwright Road and Milam Road. Construction will begin in 2022.
City Manager Cliff Keheley stated, “We are eager to make improvements to this roadway. Lawson Road is a top priority for the City Council and the Public Works staff. This grant allows us to make immediate improvements while we undertake the larger project of designing the full reconstruction of this roadway. I’m proud of our Public Works team for finding this grant and presenting an exceptional application.”
The TxDOT grant is part of the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) which funds projects to reduce the quantity and severity of traffic crashes on specific roadways. The city will fund the remaining $47,193 portion of the estimated construction costs not covered by the grant. HSIP is federally funded. Program funds are eligible to cover 90% of project costs.
