Mesquite, TX - November 12, 2019 - On Saturday, November 9, the Mesquite community held a ceremony to officially break ground on the new Mesquite Veterans Memorial. The event featured remarks by community leaders, a free music concert and the start of public brick sales. The memorial will be located near City Lake Park and is expected to be completed in 2020. The memorial will be a place to honor all military veterans, their families and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. More details on the project and online brick purchases are available at www.MesquiteVeteransMemorial.org.
The memorial’s visionary Randy Lawson said, “This memorial was birthed from a dream some 12 years ago. My focus on this memorial has been intense. I would like to thank the City Council for recognizing our need and our responsibility to honor our veterans.”
The memorial will feature a plaza with military medallions to recognize all branches of the armed forces and a special area to recognize those from Mesquite who were killed in service. The plaza area will also be home to a large five-and half--foot bronze eagle, three lighted flag poles, benches and other commemorative items. Bricks purchased by the public will be set along the granite walkway that lead visitors to the plaza area. The bricks are four by eight inches and are available for $50 each.
The memorial’s title sponsor is Atmos Energy who has made a commitment to donate $100,000 to project. The public awareness and funding campaign that began two years ago will continue into 2020 as the additional funds are needed to complete the construction of the memorial.
