Throughout February, the City of Mesquite will host events, activities and recognitions to celebrate Black History Month.
The City has an enriching day planned to honor Black History. In partnership with Mesquite ISD, and Dallas College – there will be delicious food… as well as a celebration of culture and creativity through student music and dance performances. The event will also feature a keynote address by Courtney Brazile of Dallas College. Festivities take place on Saturday, February 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dallas College, Eastfield Campus, Building B (3737 Motley Drive). Also this month, Historic Mesquite, Inc. launches Time Travel Tuesdays, a social media campaign that will highlight the stories, achievements, and lasting contributions of notable Black residents who have helped shape the City of Mesquite. Throughout the month, the campaign will spotlight individuals and moments from local history that reflect Mesquite’s rich and diverse heritage. The Mesquite Public Library has several events planned to celebrate Black History Month. On Saturday, February 21 at 2 p.m., the Main Library will host a session about Black inventors. Visitors can learn, explore, and have fun while discovering the people who changed the game. Enjoy stories by Black authors, as well as songs, and activities that celebrate culture and community during Storytimes at the North Branch Library on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. Adults can join the North Book Club on Thursday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m. and honor Black History Month through books. Participants can choose a title from the library’s curated list of classic and contemporary books relating to Black History, and then take part in a discussion with fellow readers. The Mesquite Arts Center’s monthly art kit for kids in February will include Black History Month-focused projects. There is a limited supply of the free art kits, so please register in advance by visiting www.MesquiteArtsCenter.org.
