Mesquite, TX – November 6, 2020 – On Nov. 6, Mayor Bruce Archer helped celebrate Arbor Day in the City of Mesquite with a virtual event including Keep Mesquite Beautiful and Vanston Middle School. Mayor Archer urged all residents to care for the City's trees and woodlands and to support the City's community forestry program.

WHEREAS, nearly 150 years ago in Nebraska, a special day was set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday, called Arbor Day, is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and

WHEREAS, trees clean the air by absorbing pollutants while providing oxygen to breathe. Forests provide habitats to about two-thirds of all species on earth; and

WHEREAS, the City of Mesquite has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the 30th consecutive year; and

WHEREAS, over 30,000 trees have been planted in our city since 1988. Today we celebrate Arbor Day by dedicating two newly planted oak trees at Vanston Middle School and celebrating the value of trees to those living in Mesquite; and

WHEREAS, this Arbor Day Ceremony commemorates the 32nd year of the Urban Forestry Program in the City of Mesquite and encourages our citizens to continue planting trees to beautify our community.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bruce Archer, Mayor of the City of Mesquite, do hereby proclaim Friday, November 6, 2020, as:

Arbor Day

in the City of Mesquite, and I urge all residents to support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to support the City’s community forestry program.
