During March, the City of Mesquite is celebrating Women’s History Month with events and recognitions.
On March 27, the Mesquite Library will host a book club focused on Women's History Month at 6:30 p.m. at North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Drive. Call 972-681-0465 for information. Also, throughout March, the Mesquite Main Library will commemorate Women's History Month with a special display of books featuring famous women throughout history.
Women’s history is always prominent at the Opal Lawrence Historical Park and Florence Ranch Homestead. The history of both sites, operated by Historic Mesquite, Inc., features women who made tremendous contributions to the Mesquite community. Visiting is a chance to learn about their daily lives and contributions, and women like them. Opal Lawrence Historical Park is located 711 E. Kearney St. and Florence Ranch Homestead is located at 1424 Barnes Bridge Road. For more information, visit www.HistoricMesquite.org.
Premiering at 4 p.m. on March 5 on the Mesquite Arts Center YouTube channel, local artist Poppy Xander and friends will explore the book “Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World,” written and illustrated by Rachel Ignotofsky.
The Arts Center also will include Women’s History Month-focused projects in its March free Tote-and-Go kits for kids, featuring female artists including Marina Abramović, Augusta Savage, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, and Hilma af Klint. There is a limited supply of Tote-and-Go kits, so please register in advance by visiting www.mesquiteartscenter.org.
Tributes to notable women in Mesquite will be featured throughout the month on the City’s social media accounts, including recognitions of former and current City leadership. Click here to connect to the City's social accounts.
