Celebrate Safely in Mesquite 


Possession and use of fireworks in Mesquite is illegal, as well as discharging firearms into the air. Fines range from $500 to $4,000 with the illegal discharge of a firearm also carrying the possible penalty of up to one year in jail. To report firearm violations, call non-emergency police dispatch at 972-285-6336. Please do not call 911 unless there is a life-threatening emergency and immediate help is required from police, fire or paramedics. Most City offices and facilities are closed for the New Year holiday Tuesday, Jan. 1. For a complete list of holiday closures and service impacts, visit cityofmesquite.com/Holidays. Trash and recycling will not be collected Jan. 1. Collection will resume on residents' next scheduled collection day.

STAR Transit offices are closed Jan. 1. This includes demand response and Terrell’s same-day service. Kaufman Trolley, The Link, Terrell Route 803, Balch Springs Midtown Express, Seagoville Express, Hutchins Shuttle Route 401, DeSoto Route 501 and COMPASS (DART Express Bus Route 282) will operate regular schedules Dec. 31. The Mesquite Fire Department is accepting online applications for firefighters through Jan. 18. The next entrance exam takes place Feb. 16, and starting salary is $61,908.84 per year. The State Comptroller’s Office reported a 6.9 percent increase in the City’s sales tax collections for the month of December compared to the same period last year. December’s report is based on sales reported by local businesses during the month of October.
