Fines range from $500 to $4,000 with the illegal discharge of a firearm also carrying the possible penalty of up to one year in jail. City holiday closures Jan. 1

Most City offices and facilities are closed for the New Year holiday Tuesday, Jan. 1. For a complete list of holiday closures and service impacts, visit cityofmesquite.com/Holidays. Trash and recycling will not be collected Jan. 1. Collection will resume on residents' next scheduled collection day.

STAR Transit holiday closures Jan. 1

STAR Transit offices are closed Jan. 1. This includes demand response and Terrell’s same-day service. Kaufman Trolley, The Link, Terrell Route 803, Balch Springs Midtown Express, Seagoville Express, Hutchins Shuttle Route 401, DeSoto Route 501 and COMPASS (DART Express Bus Route 282) will operate regular schedules Dec. 31. Mesquite Fire Department accepting applications through Jan. 18

The Mesquite Fire Department is accepting online applications for firefighters through Jan. 18. The next entrance exam takes place Feb. 16, and starting salary is $61,908.84 per year. Applicants must be between ages 21 and 35 and must be a citizen of the United States. View additional qualifications and more information.

Start the New Year by going green with your live Christmas tree. Live Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means they are easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes. Monthly sales tax report

The State Comptroller’s Office reported a 6.9 percent increase in the City’s sales tax collections for the month of December compared to the same period last year. December’s report is based on sales reported by local businesses during the month of October. Last year the City collected a record high of $32.8 million in sales tax and is projecting to collect approximately the same amount this year.
