City holds Tax Election Public Meeting on Oct. 14 and 26


The City will hold public meetings about the upcoming tax election on Nov. 2. Proposition A is on the ballot for more public safety, more street repair and more cybersecurity. The Mesquite City Council unanimously approved the fiscal year 2021 – 2022 budget which keeps the City property tax rate the same as last year. State law requires that Mesquite voters approve this year’s tax rate which exceeds the 3.5% voter-approval tax rate. The next public meeting on the tax election will be on Oct. 14 at Rutherford Recreation Center Senior Activity Room, 900 Rutherford Drive, at 7 p.m. Learn more.

Town Hall Tuesday on changes to Solid Waste Ordinance


The City of Mesquite will host a Town Hall Tuesday public information meeting to educate the community about the Solid Waste Ordinance changes that were put into place to address litter and community appearance. The meeting will provide solid waste customers the opportunity to ask City staff questions regarding the requirements. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at Mesquite City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue in the Training Rooms. Council approves funding agreement for Lawson Road improvements


At the Oct. 4 council meeting, the Mesquite City Council approved an advanced funding agreement for the Lawson Road Highway Safety Program (HSIP) Project. This agreement will authorize funding and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) participation in the project. The city announced it had been awarded a state grant of $471,930 for the project in April. Learn more.

City honors Paralympian Deja Young-Craddock


Monday, Oct. 4 was Deja Young-Craddock Day in the City of Mesquite. Young-Craddock was presented with a proclamation at the Oct. 4 council meeting, honoring the Paralympian and graduate from John Horn High School for winning a bronze medal at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 in the 100-meter. Mayor greets students on National Walk to School Day


On Oct. 6, Mayor Bruce Archer and cheerleaders greeted students at Kimball Elementary for National Walk and Bike to School Day. National Walk and Bike to School Day is about getting up and moving. Being able to walk and ride a bike in the community gives children a strong sense of self-confidence and a better quality of life.

PumpkinFest on Oct. 16


The 20th annual PumpkinFest will be held on Oct. 16 from 12 – 5 p.m. at Valley Creek Park, 2482 Pioneer Road. The family-friendly event features different contests, community stage performances, trick or treating, carnival games, rides, and a variety of tasty carnival food. Children from infants to 17 years of age can participate in the costume contest scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Learn more.

Fall Book Sale at the Library


The Mesquite Public Library's annual Book Sale is on Friday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will be at the Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive. For more information, please call 972-216-6220.

Volunteers take part in Addressing Mesquite Day


On Saturday, Oct. 2, nearly 500 volunteers gathered throughout Mesquite to assist 50 homeowners with home projects such as painting, landscaping and other minor home exterior projects. This was all part of the 17th annual Addressing Mesquite Day. Learn more.

Meter conversion project starts


The City of Mesquite has started a meter conversion project for all its residential and commercial water utility customers. The company Ameresco and their subcontractor Pedal Valve (PVI) were chosen to replace outdated manual meters with upgraded meters as part of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project which will upgrade and modernize the City’s water billing infrastructure. With this AMI water meter project, customers will have access to more frequent detailed information about water consumption, enabling them to have better control over their water usage and monthly bills.
