Resident Library Card Application

A library card for a Mesquite resident is issued for a period of three years. When the card expires, residents will be asked to visit one of our libraries to verify their address and other information. Then the card will be extended for another three years. This also applies to residents of Garland, Balch Springs, and other exceptions to the non-residency card.

A parent or legal guardian can apply for a library card for a child 11 years old and younger. Teens aged 12-17 years can apply for a library card on their own; a parent’s signature is required on the application to allow access to the library’s Internet Access computers.

Library Cards

Library cards are available free of charge to:

  • Mesquite residents.
  • City of Mesquite/MISD/Eastfield employees
  • MISD or Eastfield (Dallas College) students
  • Mesquite Business Owners
  • Garland or Balch Springs Residents

Resident Library Card Renewal

If your library card expires, you will need to visit one of our libraries to renew the card. At that time, we will need to verify your address and other information to extend the card for another three years.

Non-Resident Card

The Mesquite Public Library System has a $25 nonrefundable annual fee for applicants who do not live in Mesquite but wish to obtain a library card. Non-resident library cards are valid for one year and have the same privileges as resident library cards. The annual fee may be amended and changed by the Mesquite City Council as deemed necessary. Replacement cards are $1.00 and are only valid until the original expiration date.

Non-Resident Library Card Renewal

A non-resident library card is issued for one year. When a non-resident card expires, the cardholder will need to visit one of our libraries to pay the annual fee and verify information for a new card.

Borrowing Items

You may borrow two items when you first receive your library card. After that first visit, there is a limit of 30 books, 5 movies, and 5 audiobooks (or Playaways) per library card.

Loan Periods

Most library items can be borrowed for three weeks. The exceptions are:

  • DVDs & Special Collections, which can be borrowed for one week.
  • cloudLibrary and Libby eBooks and eAudiobooks, which can be borrowed for two weeks.
  • Hotspots, which can be borrowed for two weeks with no renewals.

All physical items (books, DVDs, special collections) will automatically renew for one additional loan period unless:

  • A hold has been placed on the item by another patron
  • There are fees totaling $5 or more on the library card account.

Renewal of physical library materials can also be made:

  • In person at the checkout desk at either the Main Library or the North Branch Library.
  • Over the telephone at 972-216-6220 (Main Library) or 972-681-0465 (North Branch Library).
  • Online at the My Account section of the Library Catalog.

(To renew materials online, you will need your library card number and PIN. Your PIN is often the last four digits of your telephone number.)

Digital items (eBooks & eAudiobooks) do not renew automatically, but can be borrowed again unless:

  • A hold has been placed on the item by another patron.
  • There are fees totaling $5.00 or more on the library card account.
