City Council and Planning and Zoning joint meeting

City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission hold joint meeting on Comprehensive Plan

City Council to meet on Feb. 18 at City Hall 


On Monday, Feb. 18, Mesquite City Council will meet at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave. The Pre-Meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B. Spread the Love fundraiser at Genghis Grill Feb. 20


On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the newly remodeled Genghis Grill, 1765 N. Town East Blvd., will donate 20 percent of all day and evening sales to the City’s Spread the Love program. The program helps feed children in food insecure homes while school is out for the summer. Customers do not need to bring a promotional flyer or mention the campaign to include their purchase in the fundraiser. Genghis Grill will share the proceeds equally with two nonprofits in Mesquite: Sharing Life Community Outreach and Mesquite Social Services. Learn more about Spread the Love.

Mayor's Winter Prayer Breakfast scheduled Feb. 21


On Thursday, Feb. 21, Mayor Stan Pickett, in partnership with Vision Mesquite, will host the free Winter Prayer Breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Ave. The featured speaker is Amanda Cunningham, Mesquite YoungLife Area Director. Raising the Bridge of Mesquite is generously sponsoring the breakfast. This event is free and open to the public.


February sales tax report

City sees an increase in December sales tax collections


The State Comptroller’s Office reported a 3.8 percent increase in the City’s sales tax collections for the month of February compared to the same period last year. February’s report is based on sales reported by local businesses during the month of December. Year-to-date collections are trending almost 2 percent higher than the previous fiscal year. Approximately 27 percent of the revenue sources for the City’s general fund comes from sales tax. The City uses the general fund to pay for basic City services including police and fire departments and parks and recreation. Learn more about the City’s budget at cityofmesquite.com/Transparency.


Pickett and Aleman recognized

Mayor Pickett and Mayor Pro Tem Aleman honored by local groups


Recently Mayor Stan Pickett and Mayor Pro Tem Dan Aleman each were recognized for their work in the community. Mayor Pickett received a plaque from Pastor Beto Meza of New Life Church DFW located at Family Cathedral in Mesquite. Mayor Pro Tem Aleman, along with his wife Debbie, were presented the prestigious World Changer Award for their work with the Men and Ladies of Honor organization which helps build character in Mesquite middle school students.
