Independence Day information

All City offices will be closed on July 3 and July 4 in observance of Independence Day. Commercial and Residential trash and recycling will be collected on July 3. Commercial and Residential trash will be collected on July 4. Commercial recycling will also be collected, but Residential recycling will not be collected on July 4. See more information at www.cityofmesquite.com/Holidays. As you plan for Independence Day gatherings and celebrations, please plan to celebrate safely. The possession and use of fireworks in Mesquite is illegal, as is discharging firearms into the air. The penalties for fireworks and gunfire can be costly. Report illegal activity by calling the Police hotline at 972-204-4888. You also can report fireworks violations by emailing fireworks@mesquitepolice.org. Movies, Music and more around town

Couples are invited to a special Movies in the Park with an outdoor screening of the movie “Date Night” on June 28 outside the Florence Recreation Center at 2501 Whitson Way. Click here for more information. Also, the Mesquite Community Band presents its Summertime Showcase at 7 p.m. on June 30 at the Mesquite Arts Center. See details at www.mesquiteartscenter.org. Give wisely to the unsheltered

Volunteer at a local charity or donate to agencies providing resources to the homeless. The City offers staff and resources to connect unsheltered individuals with assistance, including transportation to shelters, support agencies and willing family or friends. Donating directly to the unsheltered may contribute to the cycle of homelessness. Learn ways to help at www.cityofmesquite.com/Homeless.

Project LEAD program accepting applications

The City of Mesquite and Mesquite ISD have partnered to form a leadership development program for local residents called Project LEAD. During the program, participants will develop their leadership skills while learning about how local government and schools work together. Interested residents are encouraged to apply by July 11. Still time to join Mayor's Reading Challenge

It's not too late for kids 12 and under to join the Mesquite Mayor 1,000-Page Reading Challenge, which runs through July 26. Children who read 1,000 pages or more will be invited to a party with the Mayor on July 26. The new and improved myMesquite app is out now for Android and iOS devices. The new app offers a streamlined system for reporting concerns in your community, tracking the progress of reports and getting in touch with City departments directly. Residents can also still report issues at www.cityofmesquite.com/mymesquite or call the myMesquite Call Center at 972-288-7711. For more information about the app enhancements, click here.

Historical parks participate in Blue Star Museum program

The Blue Star Museum national program provides active-duty military personnel and their families with free admission to participating museums, including Mesquite's Opal Lawrence Historical Park and Florence Ranch Homestead, through Sept. 1.
