City Council meets Oct. 4


Mesquite City Council will meet on Oct. 4 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B followed by the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. The public attending the meeting will have the option of wearing a face covering but the city will continue to implement social distancing measures with limited seating. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on Oct. 4 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216- 6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Oct. 4 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. Mesquite announces David Gill as new Police Chief


Assistant Police Chief David Gill has been selected as the City of Mesquite’s next Police Chief. A 27-year veteran of the Mesquite Police Department, Chief Gill has served in all areas of the department both as a supervisor and as an officer. He has earned 34 department honors including three Life Saving Awards and two Certificates of Merit. Learn more.

City holds Tax Election Public Meeting on Oct. 7, 14, 26


The City will hold three public meetings about the upcoming tax election on Nov. 2. The Mesquite City Council unanimously approved the fiscal year 2021-2022 budget, which keeps the City property tax rate the same as last year. The budget adds public safety, streets and cybersecurity resources to the City’s operations and maintenance of the community. State law requires that Mesquite voters approve this year’s tax rate which exceeds the 3.5% voter-approval tax rate. The first public meeting on the tax election will be on Thursday, Oct. 7 at Florence Recreation Center, 2501 Whitson Way, at 7 p.m. Learn more.

Mesquite promotes Chris Sanchez to Assistant City Manager


The City of Mesquite has announced that Chris Sanchez has been promoted to Assistant City Manager effective Oct. 1. He will oversee the Information Technology Department, Mesquite Arts Center, the Neighborhood Vitality programs, the Dispatch Center in the Water Utilities Division and Strategic Services. Sanchez has been with the city as the Assistant to the City Manager/Legislative Officer since 2018. Learn more.

Mesquite approves new 235-home residential development


On Sept. 20, the Mesquite City Council passed a resolution to approve terms and conditions with TDI Valleybrooke, LLC, for the construction and development of 235-home lots in a new single-family home subdivision called Valley Brooke. It will be located at 2400 Mesquite Valley Road and 2800 Mesquite Valley Road. Learn more.

New solid waste ordinance goes into effect Oct. 1


As a part of its new Clean City Initiative, the Mesquite City Council approved new requirements for its solid waste customers that go into effect Oct. 1, which include trash being secured in trash bags within an approved trash container, specific times on when the trash can be set out for collection and limits on bulky items. For more information call the Solid Waste Division at 972-216-6285. Meter conversion project starts in October


The City of Mesquite has started a meter conversion project for all its residential and commercial water utility customers. The company Ameresco and their subcontractor Pedal Valve (PVI) were chosen to replace outdated manual meters with upgraded meters as part of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project which will upgrade and modernize the City’s water billing infrastructure. With this AMI water meter project, customers will have access to more frequent detailed information about water consumption, enabling them to have better control over their water usage and monthly bills.
