Doggie Splash Day on Aug. 7


Dogs and their owners are invited to splash and play at the 17th annual Doggie Splash Day on Saturday, Aug. 7. The event will be from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Vanston Pool, 2913 Oates Drive. Admission is $5 for one owner and one pet, $2 for each additional pet and $1 for all spectators. Participants who bring a jar of peanut butter or jelly to support the Spread the Love campaign will receive $2 off admission. The Mesquite Animal Shelter will also be at Doggie Splash Day with dogs who are available for adoption. They will also be offering free microchipping. Learn more.

Mesquite Police Department promotes Stephen Biggs to rank of Captain


On July 30, Mesquite Police Department Interim Police Chief David Faaborg announced the promotion of Lieutenant Stephen Biggs to the rank of Captain. He will now oversee the department’s Staff Support Bureau of hiring and training officers, school resource officers, community policing and crime prevention, as well as command the department’s S.W.A.T team and will continue serving as the primary Public Information Officer. On July 30, the City of Mesquite honored Lieutenant Chris Kneggs for 28 years of service to the Mesquite Fire Department. Chris Kneggs started his career with the Mesquite Fire Department on March 29, 1993, was promoted to Driver in 2000 and to Lieutenant in 2006. Mayor Bruce Archer presented a proclamation at his retirement ceremony. Learn more and read the proclamation.

Mesquite seeks public input on new parks master plan


The City of Mesquite is seeking public input on a new Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan through a citizen survey at www.cityofmesquite.com/ParksMasterPlan. The survey includes specific questions on facilities, programs and parks. The new master plan is expected to be completed later this fall. The survey is open until Aug. 15. Learn more.

File to run as a candidate for City Council


The City of Mesquite has launched a new webpage to assist those who want to consider filing their candidacy to serve on the City Council. The 2021 City election, for the purpose of electing a Mayor and Councilmembers for Places 1 – 6, will be held on Nov. 2. The last day to file is Aug.16. The webpage is www.cityofmesquite.com/CouncilCandidate and the public may contact the City Secretary’s Office at 972-216-6401 or at CouncilCandidate@cityofmesquite.com for additional information.

Mesquite Championship Rodeo


The Mesquite Championship Rodeo (MCR) is at the Mesquite Arena, 1818 Rodeo Drive for the summer. MCR will take place every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. until Aug. 28. For more than 60 years, MCR has entertained families with thrilling rodeo events such as saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping and more. Purchase tickets.
