2025 Tax Rate Election
The tax rate election gives the residents of Mesquite the opportunity to help guide the future of the community by voting on several community priorities which include Streets, Fire and Police.

The fiscal year 2025-2026 budget was approved on Aug. 18. The current budget increases the tax rate to 0.73000 per $100 of ad valorem value. Because of the need for additional revenues to accomplish the goals of the community, state law requires Mesquite voters to approve the tax rate since City revenue will increase by 3.5% or more over last year. Proposition A will be on the Nov. 4 Ballot for Mesquite voters to vote “FOR” or “AGAINST” the proposition. View the fiscal year 2025 - 2026 approved budget.
Voter approval of Proposition A will provide revenue for the approved budget that allocates funds for:
Streets:
- The reconstruction of major roadways like La Prada Drive and initial funding for the design of Lawson Road.
- A significant increase for routine maintenance of thoroughfares, residential streets and alleys to keep up with the rising costs of supplies like concrete and asphalt.
As our community grows, so does the need for more firefighters and police officers. The City Council has prioritized a strategic approach to adding public safety staffing and equipment over time to stay ahead of population growth.
Fire:
- Two new firefighters to maintain fast response times and address staffing needs.
Police:
- Three new police officer positions to help expand patrols throughout the city and provide services to new neighborhoods.
Other budget priorities:
- Additional staffing for the maintenance of police and fire equipment and apparatus.
- Enhanced Library Services – which includes new, up-to-date materials to expand and modernize the collection.
- Additional funding to address homeless issues.
- Competitive pay for fire, police and other positions in the city.
Impact on Taxpayers
Based on the average property value within the city of Mesquite, the average homeowner would pay about $5 more per month in City taxes. The tax rate will not impact property owners who have qualified for the Age 65 or Older Homestead Exemption with their property appraiser.
