City Council to meet Sept. 18


Mesquite City Council meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister by either sending an email to sland@cityofmesquite.com or calling 972-216-6244 before 3 p.m. on Sept. 18. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Sept. 18 to the City Secretary. Scam alert for water customers 


The City of Mesquite has been notified of a scam in which individuals are calling businesses pretending to be representatives of the City. Scammers are threating to turn water off if the water bill is not paid, or payment is not made for a new water meter. The City communicates with its customers regarding financial matters through written correspondence, not phone calls. If you receive a telephone call from someone threating to turn off your water, please call the myMesquite Call Center at 972-288-7711 or check your account online at https://mesquitetx.watersmart.com/index.php/welcome.




Tax election

City of Mesquite to host Town Hall meetings on 2023 Tax Rate Election


The City of Mesquite will host two Town Hall Tuesday meetings for residents to learn and ask questions about the upcoming Tax Rate Election. The first Town Hall meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Florence Recreation Center, 2501 Whitson Way. The second meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Rutherford Recreation Center, 900 Rutherford Drive. In August, the Mesquite City Council unanimously approved the City’s 2023-24 budget that includes funding for roadway and alley reconstruction, additional police officers, a new fire station, staffing and equipment to operate the fire station, and a new Behavioral Health Division. The budget will require an increase in the tax rate of $0.03186 per $100 ad valorem value. Early voting starts on Oct. 23. Resident input sought through Mesquite Community Survey


This fall, the City of Mesquite will conduct a Community Survey to get input from its citizens on programs and services. In the first phase through October, Mesquite residents selected at random will receive an invitation by text message, letter or social media to participate in the survey questionnaire. The online survey will be open to all residents later in November. All responses will be kept confidential. The survey will be administered by ETC Institute, a national leader in conducting customer satisfaction surveys for government organizations. Parks and Recreation hosting a pair of fall family-friendly events in October


On Saturday, Oct. 7, the final Movies in the Park event of the year will be a screening of “The Addams Family 2.” Pre-show entertainment at the free event will begin at 7 p.m., including face painting, basketball, volleyball and light concessions. The movie starts at dusk at Rorie-Galloway Day Camp, 3100 Lawson Road. On Saturday, Oct. 21, the City will host its annual PumpkinFest from 12 to 5 p.m. The free event will feature a new hay maze and hay ride this year. August tax receipts

August sales tax receipts


The City of Mesquite August sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of June, was 4.0% above the amount reported for the same period last year.  Of that increase, 4.3% is true growth compared to the same period last year and  -0.3% is due to audit collections that typically cover prior periods.  The current growth in sales activity is driven primarily by manufacturing and construction. Sales tax contributes approximately 27% of the total revenue used to support the General Fund.  The City uses the General Fund for services including police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries, neighborhood services and public works.
