Mesquite, MISD, Balch Springs create leadership program for residents The City of Mesquite, Mesquite Independent School District and the City of Balch Springs have collaborated to form a leadership development program for citizens called Project LEAD. Program organizers are looking for motivated residents interested in learning about leadership, growing as a civic leader and contributing to the growth of their cities and school district. Those selected to participate in Project LEAD will commit to attending four sessions. Classes will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 17, Nov. 7, Dec. 5 and Jan. 16. Mesquite Animal Shelter to offer free pet adoptions on Aug. 26 The Mesquite Animal Shelter, 1650 Gross Road, is once again participating in the national Clear the Shelters initiative that promotes pet adoption and donations in August. On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Animal Shelter will host a special one-day adoption event, waiving all fees. Shelter pets available for adoption are sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped. To see the pets currently in the shelter, visit animals in the shelter. Regular operating hours for the shelter are 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The shelter is also open 1-5:30 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Seven new paramedics added to the Fire Department Congratulations to the Mesquite Fire Department's newest paramedics. Becoming a paramedic requires a broad knowledge base about the human body as well as being able to handle medical emergencies with efficiency, accuracy, and poise. Next, they will further their knowledge by riding in ambulances and on-the-job training.
