City facilities closed on Labor Day
Please remember all City of Mesquite offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4 for Labor Day with the exception of the Mesquite Metro Airport and Recreation Centers. No trash or recycling will be collected. Collection will resume on residents’ next scheduled collection day. Mesquite City Council meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister by either sending an email to sland@cityofmesquite.com or calling 972-216-6244 before 3 p.m. on Sept. 5. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Sept. 5 to the City Secretary. Mesquite, MISD, Balch Springs create leadership program for residents
The City of Mesquite, Mesquite Independent School District and the City of Balch Springs have collaborated to form a leadership development program for citizens called Project LEAD. Program organizers are looking for motivated residents interested in learning about leadership, growing as a civic leader and contributing to the growth of their cities and school district. Those selected to participate in Project LEAD will commit to attending four sessions. Classes will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 17, Nov. 7, Dec. 5 and Jan. 16. Guts & Gory Zombie Fun
Zombies have been reported to be taking over the park at Camp Rorie Galloway. Do you have what it takes to survive and escape? Experience a zombie apocalypse at the “Guts and Gory” Zombie Run and challenge on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at Camp Rorie Galloway, 3100 Lawson Road. Mesquite Animal Shelter to offer free pet adoptions on Aug. 26
The Mesquite Animal Shelter, 1650 Gross Road, is once again participating in the national Clear the Shelters initiative that promotes pet adoption and donations in August. On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Animal Shelter will host a special one-day adoption event, waiving all fees. Shelter pets available for adoption are sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped. To see the pets currently in the shelter, visit animals in the shelter. Regular operating hours for the shelter are 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The shelter is also open 1-5:30 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

KMB to host 35th Anniversary

Keep Mesquite Beautiful, Inc. (KMB) will celebrate its 35th anniversary from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, at the Mesquite Convention Center, 1700 Rodeo Drive, with dinner, drinks, live music, dancing, an auction, and much more. VIP reception starts at 6 p.m. general admission begins at 7 p.m. VIP tickets cost $100 each, while general admission tickets cost $75 each. Tickets may be purchased online at Butterfly Ball.

Seven new paramedics added to the Fire Department
Congratulations to the Mesquite Fire Department's newest paramedics. Becoming a paramedic requires a broad knowledge base about the human body as well as being able to handle medical emergencies with efficiency, accuracy, and poise. Next, they will further their knowledge by riding in ambulances and on-the-job training.
