Raising the Bridge celebrates five years in Mesquite


Friends and supporters, as well as the young men and women who attend Raising The Bridge, gathered in June for a 5-year anniversary event. Raising The Bridge, a Mesquite based non-profit, mentors and strengthens the youth of the community and surrounding areas with programs, activities and fun. As a part of the event, City Manager Cliff Keheley accepted a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the City of Mesquite for their support of the organization. Mesquite seeks public input on new parks master plan


The City of Mesquite is seeking public input on a new Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan through a citizen survey at www.cityofmesquite.com/ParksMasterPlan. The survey includes specific questions on facilities, programs and parks. The new master plan is expected to be completed later this fall. The survey is open until Aug. 15. Learn more.

Monthly virtual community health forum on fitness and health resources


As a part of its Recovery Mesquite efforts to help the community move forward and onward from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Mesquite continues the virtual Community Health Forum Series on July 27 at 7 p.m. The focus is on fitness and health resources available through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department as a part of the National Park and Recreation Month for the month of July. File to run as a candidate for City Council


The City of Mesquite has launched a new webpage to assist those who want to consider filing their candidacy to serve on the City Council. The 2021 City election, for the purpose of electing a Mayor and Councilmembers for Places 1 – 6, will be held on Nov. 2. The last day to file is Aug.16. The webpage is www.cityofmesquite.com/CouncilCandidate and the public may contact the City Secretary’s Office at 972-216-6401 or at CouncilCandidate@cityofmesquite.com for additional information.

Mesquite high school students complete City Summer Youth Internship Program


On July 23, the City of Mesquite and local businesses recognized 18 summer interns, celebrating the end of the City of Mesquite’s Summer Youth Internship Program. Each intern received a Certificate of Achievement for completing the program and a letter of recommendation. Two students internship at Clown Co. has led to both earning part-time jobs after the program has ended. Learn more.

Mesquite continues with summer PB&J drive to help families


The Public Works Department made a generous donation of peanut butter and jelly to Sharing Life Community Outreach as a part of the city’s Spread the Love campaign. Spread the Love is a campaign held April - August that encourages the donation of peanut butter and jelly to help feed children in Mesquite who live in food insecure environments. The city has donation bins located at its facilities and financial contributions can be made online at www.cityofmesquite.com/SpreadTheLove.

Two-week closure at Ashwood Drive at IH 30 Frontage Road


In order to facilitate pavement operations, the access point to Ashwood Drive from the westbound IH 30 frontage road will be closed for approximately two weeks. The closure started on July 22 and will last until Aug. 5. Please sign up for TxDOT email and/or text alerts to be notified of specific closures along the frontage road. Mesquite Championship Rodeo


The Mesquite Championship Rodeo (MCR) is at the Mesquite Arena, 1818 Rodeo Drive for the summer. MCR will take place every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. until Aug. 28. For more than 60 years, MCR has entertained families with thrilling rodeo events such as saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping and more. Purchase tickets.

July monthly sales tax revenues

City announces sales tax activity for May 2021


The City of Mesquite’s July sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of May, is 16.2% above the amount reported for the same period last year when the pandemic restrictions were in place. The increase in sales tax activity this period is driven by home furnishings, retail sales and food and beverage services. Sales tax contributes 25% of the total revenue used to support the City’s General Fund, which supports services such as police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and public works.
