Mesquite announces a 9% decrease in crime during 2020

In Mesquite, burglaries and incidents of breaking and entering were down 52% in December of 2020 as compared to December of 2019, as was shoplifting by 26% and thefts of vehicles by 21%. These monthly results were announced in addition to the Mesquite Police Department’s quarterly report presented to the City Council on Feb. 1 that showed a 9% decrease in total crimes from 2020 to 2019. Mesquite moves forward to expand its animal shelter


The Mesquite City Council approved a $227,735 contract with GSR Andrade Architects to expand the existing Mesquite Animal Shelter facility by 4,000 square feet. The expansion will include more kennels to house animals as well as a new outdoor play area. The design phase is anticipated to be completed in approximately six months with construction starting in fall 2021. The current shelter is 11,000 square feet. Learn more.

Mesquite Fire Department presents 2021 Awards


The Mesquite Fire Department (MFD) honored over 70 employees at the Feb. 1 City Council Meeting. During a prerecorded ceremony, MFD presented the 2021 Meritorious Awards to firefighters for their professional achievements and service to the Mesquite community. Watch the award presentation. City of Mesquite receives 2020 Silver Fleet Award


The City of Mesquite’s Equipment Services Division of the Public Works Department was recognized as a 2020 Silver Fleet Award Winner for the second year in a row. The annual honor, awarded by the North Texas Council of Government’s Clean City Commission, recognizes fleets for their commitment to a cleaner environment through their efforts to reduce emissions and improve the fuel efficiency of their fleets. Mesquite is one of only six cities in North Texas to receive the Silver Fleet Award. Learn more.

An organization is only as good as the people that work in it, and this year three Mesquite Animal Services Officers have gone above and beyond to help animals in need. Sr. Animal Officer DeSio, Officer Stockman and Officer Stillinger recently received thanks from the community for helping two dogs whose owner was in the hospital with the coronavirus. Neighborhood Credit Union will be hosting a Financial Literacy class on Feb. 10 at 11:30 a.m. Participants will learn common reasons why people find themselves in debt and the most common types of debt. DCHHS offers Emergency Housing
Assistance Program and Texas Eviction Diversion Program

Dallas County Health & Human Services (DCHHS) is offering assistance to Dallas County residents through the Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP) and Texas Eviction Diversion Program (TEDP). Mesquite residents affected by the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic can now apply for these programs. Learn more.

How to pay your water bill


City utility customers have several options to pay their water utility bills, including online. Watch this video in English or in Spanish to learn more. The City of Mesquite has resumed water disconnections of delinquent accounts. Longer-term payment plans are available to help residents who are struggling to pay their City water bills due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Call the Utility Billing Office at 972- 216-6208 (press 0) to discuss your options.

Mesquite Arts Center offers free craft


The Mesquite Arts Council is offering a free Create Your Own Ceramic Arts craft, as part of their Tote-and-Go Service on Feb. 8. This event is first-come, first-serve. Kits will be available for pick up starting at 12 p.m. inside the Mesquite Arts Center front lobby through a contactless service. Learn more. Mesquite Library holds jobseeker support sessions


The Mesquite Main Library is offering free jobseeker support sessions. Schedule a 30-minute session in person or by phone. Staff will offer assistance and resources to help with job applications, resumes and practice interviews.
