City Council meets May 4


Mesquite City Council will meet on May 4, at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B, followed by the Staff Work Session at 6:30 p.m. and the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. In order to advance the public health and support social distancing in response to the coronavirus pandemic, access to the rooms will be limited to the City Council, designated City staff, individuals with official business on the agenda and the public requesting to speak. Members of the public requesting to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister. Contact the City Secretary’s Office no later than 3 p.m., May 4 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216-6244. Provide your name, address and phone number to be used for calling into the meeting. Members of the public interested in speaking during the meeting are advised to remotely access the meeting by dialing either one of the following toll-free numbers: 877-853-5257 or 888-475-4499. Mesquite announces plans to address Governor Abbott’s Open Texas plan


The City of Mesquite announced the steps it will take to monitor local businesses and enforce the details outlined by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to re-open specific businesses beginning May 1. Mesquite businesses will be expected to display occupancy limit signage in accordance with the Executive Order requiring 25% occupancy in non-essential retail stores and restaurants. City staff will monitor businesses and address activities not in compliance with the rules to reopen. Residents wishing to report a business not in compliance with the order should contact the manager of the store and then call 911 to report the business to the City. This week, job seekers can watch a video with Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas and get resume tips from the City’s Human Resources Department. Mesquite Police Department offers free gun locks


The Mesquite Police Department has joined Project ChildSafe, a nationwide educational program that promotes the safe storage of firearms in the home. The program raises awareness about firearms safety by distributing gun locks and educational materials to gun owners. Project ChildSafe has provided MPD with free gun locks to distribute to the community. Learn more.

Census 2020 deadline extended


Due to COVID-19, the U.S. Census Bureau is delaying sending census takers out into communities. However, you can be proactive and complete the 2020 Census today. Residents can visit https://2020census.gov/ and click “Respond” to start filling out their 2020 Census online. Palos Verdes Lake

Palos Verdes wildlife relocation to begin


The City is improving the flood control at Palos Verdes Lake. As a part of the project, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has permitted the City to proceed with the safe relocation of turtles and fish to allow for the construction to be completed. A certified team of licensed biologists from PondMedics started relocating wildlife this week.
