Fill the boot

Mesquite Firefighter's Fill the Boot campaign raises $38,000 for MDA


Representatives from the Mesquite Firefighters Association (MFA) presented a $38,000 check to Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Representative Caity Bowen during the City Council meeting on July 3. The funds were raised during the MDA's annual Fill the Boot campaign, supported by firefighters throughout the country for more than 60 years. The campaign was conducted in May with members of the MFA collecting donations at major intersections in Mesquite. The donations support research for 43 different diseases including muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Volunteers needed for Addressing Mesquite Day on October 7


On Saturday, October 7, the Mesquite Ministerial Alliance and the City of Mesquite will host Addressing Mesquite Day. Volunteers are needed for this event, which matches community volunteer groups with homeowners in need of extra assistance. Priority is given to homeowners who are seniors, residents with disabilities and veterans. Visit  www.cityofmesquite.com/AMD to volunteer or for more information.

Applications now being accepted for 2017 Citizens' Fire Academy


The Mesquite Fire Department is now accepting applications for the 2017 Citizens' Fire Academy. The academy is a nine-week program which provides residents the opportunity to learn about the Fire Department directly from city firefighters and officers. The program is offered once a year and begins in September. Classes are held on Thursday nights from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., September 14 - November 9. Individuals interested in participating can complete an application available at www.cityofmesquite.com/CitizensFireAcademy.

Public hearing on STAR Transit fare restructure to be held on July 10


A public hearing on the proposal to amend STAR Transit’s fare structure will be held on Monday, July 10, at 6 p.m. at the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Avenue. Anyone wishing to make comments is invited to attend and express their views. Transportation to the meeting is available, but space is limited and advance booking is required.
