Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. to build South Central Distribution and Fulfillment Center in Mesquite

This week, the City of Mesquite announced Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. will invest $65 million into a 358-acre tract of land in the eastern portion of Mesquite for a new 850,000 square-foot south central distribution and fulfillment center which will bring nearly 350 full-time jobs to the community. The agreement also encourages Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. to make future investments in Mesquite by significantly increasing the size of the contemplated facility and the number of local jobs.

Hagen Hill model homes completed and open for tours

Bloomfield Homes has completed construction of two model homes in Mesquite’s newest subdivision, Hagen Hill, located at Interstate Highway 20 and Lumley Road. The community’s sales office is located inside the model home located at 6008 Hagen Hill Parkway. The homes are open for tours, Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday, from noon - 6 p.m. The homes are priced from the $280’s - $400’s with luxury standard features such as granite countertops, oversized kitchen islands, decorative crown molding and more. Dallas Mavericks Wesley Matthews presents City with large donation at “Spread the Love” food drive rally

On March 9, Dallas Mavericks guard Wesley Matthews made a special appearance at Florence Elementary School in support of the City’s “Spread the Love” peanut butter and jelly food drive. Matthews, President of the Driven2Greatn3ss Foundation, presented the City with a donation of enough peanut butter and jelly jars to make 20,000 sandwiches courtesy of Albertsons/Tom Thumb Companies. Mayor Stan Pickett, Mesquite Independent School District Superintendent Dr. David Vroonland and Sharing Life Community Outreach Director Teresa Jackson were also in attendance to express their appreciation. Back Home on the Ranch celebration to be held on March 18

A free celebration for the reopening of the Florence Ranch Homestead, 1424 Barnes Bridge Road, will be held on Saturday, March 18, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Free lunch will be provided while supplies last. Games and activities will include tours of the Florence Ranch Homestead, sack and stick horse races, family feud tug-o-war, fresh-churned butter by the bell and more. Monthly sales tax report


The State Comptroller’s Office reported a 0.7 percent increase in the City’s sales tax collections for the month of March.  March’s report is based on sales reported by local businesses during the month of January. Overall, sales tax collections are up 0.1 percent for the year and is an indicator of a stable local economy. Taylor Gabriel

Atlanta Falcons and Horn High School graduate Taylor Gabriel honored during City Council meeting

On March 6, a public reception was held at Mesquite City Hall in honor of Atlanta Falcons wide receiver and Horn High School graduate Taylor Gabriel. Mr. Gabriel recently played in Super Bowl LI in Houston. During the City Council meeting, Mayor Stan Pickett announced Honorary Road in Mesquite has been temporarily named “Kimberly Gabriel Pass” after Mr. Gabriel’s mother and presented him with a ceremonial sign with the same inscription. Mr. Gabriel signed autographs for fans and Little League Football players both before and after the presentation.

Rerouting of traffic necessary for
Gus Thomasson Road and Motley Drive reconstruction projects


Due to the current reconstruction of Gus Thomasson Road from Karla Drive to Moon Drive/Whitson Way, traffic will be rerouted to the northbound lanes from Karla to Oates on March 14. Traffic changes are also necessary for the Motley Drive (Gus Thomasson to Town East) reconstruction project. Two-way traffic will begin to be switched to the northbound lanes, starting from Town East to Belhaven and continuing south as construction progresses, beginning March 13.  For more information on these and other Public Works projects, visit www.cityofmesquite.com/PublicWorksProjects.

Ryan Justice Mazda of Mesquite holds grand opening

On March 4, Ryan Justice Mazda of Mesquite celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting, refreshments, giveaways and more. Mayor Stan Pickett, members of the Mesquite City Council and Chamber of Commerce were in attendance to welcome the new dealership to Mesquite. The dealership is located at 15900 Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway.
