Mesquite joins Garland, Plano and Richardson in request for NTMWD water rate relief

On December 14, the Mayors of Mesquite, Garland, Plano and Richardson announced their cities are asking the Public Utility Commission (PUC) to conduct a review of their water rates with the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD). Gift of reading

Mesquite to host free Gift of Reading event on December 21 and 22

The City of Mesquite invites the community to attend The Gift of Reading event featuring special guest readers at the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive, on December 21 and 22 from 3 - 5 p.m. The guest readers will include police officers, firefighters and others. The free event will include complimentary holiday treats and a craft table for kids. Guest readers will appear at 3:30 p.m. each day to read holiday-themed books. TxDOT

TxDOT digital signs aim to decrease alcohol-related traffic fatalities

This week, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began displaying information intended to help decrease alcohol-related traffic fatalities on their digital signs at various locations throughout Mesquite. The messages will run nightly from 8 p.m. - 3 a.m. now through January 1. The signs are being used in a statewide effort to reduce occurrences of alcohol-impaired driving during the holidays. Last year, there were 2,374 alcohol-related crashes in Texas, resulting in 102 fatalities and 205 serious injuries during the holiday season.


Nine

New Art Around Town installed


A new sculpture entitled “Nine” was installed this week at Paschall Park, 1001 New Market Road. The sculpture replaced the artwork entitled “Spectra 214." Both sculptures were created by artist Scott Shubin. Mr. Shubin works in steel, creating abstract forms that range in size from desktop pieces to structures exceeding thirty feet tall. His work appears in both public and private collections.


Little Rookies basketball

Registration is open for Little Rookies basketball

Registration is open through December 30 for Little Rookies basketball for children ages 3 - 4. Sessions will begin Saturday, January 7 at Dunford Recreation Center, 1015 Green Canyon. Two sessions are available at 9 and 10 a.m. The fee is $35 per player and parent participation is required. For more information, visit www.cityofmesquite.com/PARD or call 972-216-6260.

City closures for Christmas and
New Year holidays


Many City of Mesquite offices and facilities will be closed December 24, 26 and 31 plus January 2 in observance of the Christmas and New Year holidays. For a complete list of closures and service impacts, please visit www.cityofmesquite.com/Holidays. For those trash and recycling collection days missed, collection will occur on the residents’ next scheduled collection day.
