Canvas of Municipal Election Results held on May 17

A special City Council meeting was held on May 17 to canvass the Municipal Election results to elect a Mayor and Councilmembers for Places 1, 2 and 6. Re-elected Mayor Stan Pickett and Councilmember Jeff Casper and newly-elected Councilmembers Robert Miklos and Tandy Boroughs were sworn into office by City Secretary Sonja Land. Town Hall Tuesday on active adult programs to be held on May 30

The City of Mesquite will host its next Town Hall Tuesday from 7 - 8 p.m. on May 30 at Mesquite City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. Mesquite launches new Permit and Plan Management System

On May 15, the City of Mesquite launched a new online permit and plan management system. The new digital system enables the online submission of permit and plan applications, the payment of associated fees, an electronic review process, requests for inspections and more. Overall, the system manages more than 114 processes and streamlines the development process. To use the new system, register online at www.energov.cityofmesquite.com.

Monthly Sales Tax Report

The State Comptroller’s Office reported a 3.0 percent increase in the City’s sales tax collections for the month of May. May’s report is based on sales reported by local businesses during the month of March. Overall, sales tax collections are relatively flat with a minimal increase of 0.1 percent for the year, an indicator of a stable local economy. Mesquite Police Department
launches new K-9 Unit

Two new officers were recently added to the Mesquite Police Department and presented with their badges during the City Council meeting held on May 15. Officers Kozmo and Axel, two highly-trained Dutch/German Shepherds, joined their handlers Officer Jason Crawford and Officer Jeremy Wilemon as members of department’s new K-9 Unit. The program is funded mostly by criminal seizure and forfeiture assets from cases solved by the Police Department. After extensive training, Officers Kozmo and Axel became nationally certified by the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association.The K-9 Unit’s main responsibilities will be to search for suspects and locate narcotics.

Mesquite Firefighters help raise donations for the Fill the Boot drive

Mesquite Firefighters have been in full force at intersections around town this week as they help raise funds for The International Association of Fire Fighters annual Fill the Boot drive. The drive ends May 20 and donations help fund research for 43 different diseases including muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A portion of the funds are also used to send thousands of children to summer camps matched to meet their needs.

Public Works Appreciation Lunch

On May 17, an appreciation lunch was held inside the Town East Water Tower to honor the City's Public Works employees. In addition to the meal, Mayor Stan Pickett honored the employees by proclaiming May 21 - 27 National Public Works Week in Mesquite. City Manager Cliff Keheley also spoke at the event to express his appreciation and Director of Public Works Tim James presented the department's awards for Employees and Supervisors of the Year.

Mesquite offers free mosquito
dunks to residents

The City of Mesquite is offering one free two-pack of mosquito dunks to residents while supplies last. The free dunks are limited to one two-pack per household. The mosquito dunks help eliminate mosquito larvae for 30 days. The free dunks are available at these locations: Health Division, Municipal Center, 1515 N. Galloway Avenue; Evans Senior Center, 1116 Hillcrest Street; Goodbar Senior Center, 3000 Concord Drive; and Rutherford Senior Center, 900 Rutherford Drive. Small Business Administration Information Forum to be held May 23

The Small Business Administration (SBA) Dallas/Fort Worth District Office will host an information forum in partnership with the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, May 23 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at Eastfield College, 3737 Motley Drive, in Building G, rooms 101 and 102. Information on financing your business, selling your product or service to federal agencies, and professional consulting advice will be offered. Attendees are requested to RSVP by calling 972-285-0211 before 5 p.m. on May 22.
