City authorizes development incentive agreement with United Parcel Service

The City Council authorized a development incentive agreement with United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) for the expansion and modernization of the company’s facility at 4200 Samuell Blvd. The agreement includes a 350,000 square-foot expansion and a minimum capital investment by UPS of $87 million. The agreement also requires that the company retain its current workforce and create the equivalent of 180 net new full-time jobs over a 10-year period. Facility construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2019 or in early 2020.

Treasures Barn Sale

Historic Mesquite, Inc. (HMI) is gearing up for its 5th annual Treasures Barn Sale and is currently accepting donations. Suggested items include clothing, furniture, home decor and other household wares. Tax receipts are available. The barn sale will be held October 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 711 E. Kearney Street. This year’s Barn Sale will celebrate the HMI’s 20^th anniversary with a Barn Bash preview party on October 13 from 6-8:30 p.m. The event will include refreshments, live and silent auctions, entertainment and first choice of barn sale items. Vendors will also be present on October 15. McKenzie Radio Tower installation

Installation of the McKenzie Radio Tower is scheduled to begin August 10. The tower will be located adjacent to the McKenzie Water Tower, near the intersection of McKenzie and Lawson Road. The tower is part of the Project 25 Radio System and will provide communication capabilities for public safety and city personnel in south Mesquite, Dallas County and parts of Kaufman County.

2016 City Council Budget Workshop available online

The 2016 City Council Budget Workshop is being held on August 5 and 6 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue, and is open to the public. The public workshop includes presentations on the following budget topics: City Manager’s Overview, General Fund Revenues and Expenditures, Water and Sewer Fund, Capital Budget, Employee Benefits and other budget discussion items.

Library receives grant

The Mesquite Public Library was recently chosen to receive a 2017 IMPACT grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, distributed through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. This $10,000 grant will go towards the purchase of laptop computers to be used for teaching basic computer classes to the public.

Pokémon Go at Heritage Square in historic downtown Mesquite
