Funds sought for Officer Houston II Highway
To honor the memory of fallen Mesquite Police Officer Richard Houston II, the Mesquite Police Association (MPA) Charities has created 821 Day, a campaign that will take place on Aug. 21. Named after Officer Houston’s badge number, on 821 Day participating area restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to help pay for signage on a designated section of Interstate 635 as the Officer Richard Houston II Memorial Highway. Doggie Splash Day Mesquite Parks and Recreation presents Doggie Splash Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon at Vanston Pool located at 2913 Oates Drive. Dogs and their owners will have the opportunity to swim together and compete in contests and races for prizes. Pre-register online at Doggie Splash Day and receive a free puppaccino. Entry fees are $5 for one pet and one owner, $2 for each additional pet, and $1 for spectators. Pet owners must bring proof of current vaccinations.

Mesquite Animal Shelter to offer free pet adoptions on Aug. 26 The Mesquite Animal Shelter, 1650 Gross Road, is once again participating in the national Clear the Shelters initiative that promotes pet adoption and donations in August. On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Animal Shelter will host a special one-day adoption event, waiving all fees. Shelter pets available for adoption are sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped. To see the pets currently in the shelter, visit animals in the shelter. Regular operating hours for the shelter are 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The shelter is also open from 1-5:30 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
