City Council briefed on new Animal Services Strategic Plan

The Mesquite City Council was briefed on a new Animal Services Strategic Plan at the February 1 Pre-Meeting. The strategic plan was developed to guide operations during the next five years and define necessary steps to address long-range needs.The complete plan can be viewed

Keep Mesquite Beautiful Receives Grant

The City of Mesquite and Keep Mesquite Beautiful, Inc. will receive a $39,489 grant for a community clean-up trailer with chainsaws, safety vests and other equipment to assist in cleanup events such as Trash Bash, Addressing Mesquite Day and the new HOME project. The equipment should be ready to use by the beginning of September clean-up events.

New Neighborhood Services Department Director Announced

On February 1, the City of Mesquite announced former Emergency Management Coordinator Raymond Rivas has been selected to serve as Neighborhood Services Director. The new Neighborhood Services Department was launched in November 2015. It oversees environmental code enforcement, the program called H.O.M.E. New Assistant Manager of Economic Development Hired

Kim Buttram has been hired as the new Assistant Manager of Economic Development beginning February 22. Buttram will assist the city in the areas of business retention, downtown redevelopment and other economic development initiatives. Buttram has served as Greenville Economic Development Business Development and Retention Director, City of Forney Economic Development Director and Forney Economic Development Corporation Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Texas A&M University and is a Certified Economic Developer.

dd's Discounts to Open New Store in Mesquite

dd's DISCOUNTS®, a division of Ross Stores, Inc. will open a new 22,000 square foot store in Mesquite on February 6. The store will be located in the Galloway Crossing Shopping Center at the NE corner of U.S. Highway 80 and Galloway Avenue. dd’s Discounts offers a moderately-priced assortment of first-quality, in-season, name brand apparel, accessories, footwear and home fashions for the entire family.

Changes to Payment Fees

The City will no longer pass on fees related to electronic payments made by check (E-check.) Payments made by credit card are still subject to a processing fee although the minimum fee for credit card payments has been reduced to $1.00.  Refunds are being processed for all E-check fees paid since inception.

Texas Cornhole League Ryder Cup

The Mesquite Convention Center and Exhibit Hall was the site of the 5th Annual Ryder Cup Tournament for the Texas Cornhole League on January 22 - 23. The bean bag game attracted more than 200 players who represented 19 teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio and North Carolina. The tournament generated 108 hotel room nights and an estimated economic impact of $39,900. Although this was the first time the Ryder Cup Tournament was held in Mesquite, the Expo Center hosted a state tournament last year and will be the site of another state tournament in June. Organizers plan to grow the Ryder Cup tournament into more of a national event and already have interest from teams in Colorado, Arizona, Florida and Georgia.

Red Light Camera Violations

Beginning in mid-February,  registration holds will be placed on vehicles with outstanding red light camera violations. There are approximately 23,000 outstanding violations owing a total of nearly $2.2 million. Those seeking to pay their outstanding violations prior to a hold being placed on their vehicle registration should follow the instructions below.
