City Council meets Sept. 28

Mesquite City Council will meet on Sept. 28, at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Regular Meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. All persons present at the meeting location must observe social distancing by remaining a minimum of six (6) feet from other meeting participants and must wear a covering over their nose and mouth. Mesquite approves budget with a tax decrease and expanded services

The Mesquite City Council approved the City of Mesquite budget for fiscal year 2020 – 2021. The budget features a tax rate decrease for property owners, no increase in fees for water utility customers and additional police officers. The City’s annual fiscal year begins Oct. 1. Mayor Bruce Archer said, “This budget is significant. It shows this City Council has listened to our citizens. We have dug deep to find ways to continue offering quality services without additional burden on tax payers.” Read more.

Mesquite announces new restaurant to open in Downtown Mesquite

The Mesquite City Council has approved an agreement for Smith’s of Mesquite to open a 6,000 square-foot full-service restaurant and entertainment venue in the historic McWhorter Greenhaw building in Downtown Mesquite. Smith’s of Mesquite will showcase the history of Downtown Mesquite by incorporating items and artifacts of the property owner, local Grammy Award musician Art Greenhaw. Learn more.

City Council approves resolution celebrating National Senior Center Month

Mesquite says Good Neighbor Day helps remind its residents to remain active and aware 

National Good Neighbor Day is Sept. 28 and the City of Mesquite is reminding neighborhoods of its “Project Porch Light” campaign, which asks its residents to help create a more active and safer community. And one way is with the use of outdoor lighting to help fight crime by lighting up neighborhoods. The City is also reminding neighbors to say something, if they see unusual activity, by calling the Mesquite Police Department’s non-emergency phone number at 972-285-6336 or 911. Read more.

Keep Mesquite Beautiful hosts successful Trash Bash

Keep Mesquite Beautiful, Inc. (KMB) held its volunteer cleanup event, Trash Bash, on Sept. 19. More than 60 volunteers helped safely cleanup 52 bags of trash from 10 locations around the City, including parks, neighborhoods and retail shopping areas. Learn more. Watch a video recap of the event.

Mesquite announces Cindy Smith as new Director of Finance

The City of Mesquite announced Cindy Smith as their new Director of Finance, effective Oct. 1. Smith, a Certified Government Financial Manager and Certified in Public Management, brings more than 16 years of financial and administrative experience to the City. Learn more.

City of Mesquite requests input on new Hazard Mitigation Plan

The City of Mesquite is updating the Hazard Mitigation Plan. Mitigation planning is a process to identify sustained actions to reduce or eliminate a long-term risk to people and their property. The City invites residents to provide input on the proposed Plan to get a better understanding of what types of disasters concern them the most. Between Sept. 24 to Sept. 30, residents can visit www.cityofmesquite.com/MitigationPlan to view the draft plan and complete an online survey. 

City of Mesquite seeking art submissions for Downtown Mesquite

10^th Annual Mesquite Meander on Oct. 9 and 10

The Mesquite Meander, Historic Mesquite, Inc.’s annual living history tour through Mesquite Cemetery will be held on Oct. 9 and 10. Tours start every ten minutes and are limited to no more than ten people per tour. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 972-216-6468 or emailing historicmesquite@cityofmesquite.com.

Meet your COVID-19 recovery caseworker

As a part of their ongoing Recovery Mesquite efforts, the
City of Mesquite announced Mesquite residents have
access to a Spanish bilingual caseworker to aid them in
submitting applications through Catholic Charities Dallas
(CCD) for COVID-19 economic assistance funds for
rental or mortgage payments, utility bills and other related expenses. Learn more.

Monthly sales tax report

The City of Mesquite’s September sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of July, is 3.7% above the amount reported for the same period last year. Total fiscal year sales tax collections for the City are .72% above last year’s collections. Sales tax contributes 25% of the total revenue used to support the City’s General Fund, which supports services such as police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and public works. Learn more.
