Mesquite, TX – July 17, 2018 – Yesterday, Mesquite took steps forward on the creation of the six new single-member districts for the City Council. The City will seek public input on the process this fall. The planning schedule includes the City Council adopting a new redistricting plan in November.
Mayor Stan Pickett stated, “The City will engage the community as we continue this journey to create a new structure for our City Council. We hope these new single member districts will generate more candidates who want to serve on the City Council and more voter turnout at the polls.”
During the Pre-Meeting, legal consultant Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta, LLP, briefed the City Council on the 2018 redistricting process. The consultant offered a proposed time line, criteria and guidelines for the redistricting plans of the City Council.
In May, Mesquite voters approved proposed amendments to the City Charter. One of the proposed amendments was the creation of six single member districts for Place 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. These new districts will go into effect for the November 2019 municipal elections.
