Mesquite City Council approves design changes to Gus Thomasson Road project

City Council

Mesquite, TX – January 16, 2018 – Tonight, the City Council approved the $997,367 in costs to change design plans for reconstruction of Gus Thomasson Road from Karla Drive to Moon Drive/Whitson Way. The costs will include the elimination of two roundabouts and revisions to associated paving and drainage.

City Manager Cliff Keheley said, “A large number of citizens and business owners in the Gus Thomasson area had communicated their input on the project to the City Council. That input included a preference for no roundabouts. Based on the City Council’s decision to change the project, we now have a plan that is supported by the citizens as well as businesses owners in the project area.” Keheley indicated that changing the design after construction had started was a complex task and that he is extremely proud of the Public Works staff, the design engineers and the contractor for making significant changes within a short amount of time.

The project involves the reconstruction of Gus Thomasson Road from Karla Drive to Moon Drive/ Whitson Way. The project contractor, Rebcon, Inc., will proceed with the changes by the end of January. Due to the project redesign and subsequent construction changes, the project is scheduled to be fully complete in July 2019. However, the city will pursue an aggressive plan that will provide traffic access to the western section of Gus Thomasson by July 2018 and the eastern section of Gus Thomasson by March 2019. A majority of the underground water, sewer and drainage improvements were completed during the redesign process.

The Gus Thomasson reconstruction project is part of a comprehensive plan to transform that area of Mesquite into a more pedestrian-friendly corridor. This included efforts to slow traffic, revitalize the local businesses and build in new amenities to connect neighboring residents. In May 2017, the city completed an extensive renovation of nearby Vanston Park. This included two lighted baseball game fields, a new picnic shelter, lighted basketball court, walking trail and improved parking for visitors to the park as well as adjoining Vanston Pool.

The facts and timeline of the Gus Thomasson project include:
