Mesquite, TX – November 8, 2017 – A community-wide effort to build a new Veterans Memorial in Mesquite will be launched on Veterans Day with a free Picnic in the Park concert set for Saturday, November 11, from 5 – 7:30 p.m. in City Lake Park, 403 S. Galloway Avenue.
The Picnic in the Park event will feature a free picnic dinner provided by the Mesquite Fire Corps and a concert by the Dallas Heritage Band. The band performs period music from the Civil War, Indian Wars, WWI and WWII using original sheet music and dressed in authentic military uniforms. The East Fork-Trinity Chapter, Texas Society, Sons of the American Revolution will provide the Presentation of the Colors. Wanda Allen of Mesquite Specialty Hospital will perform the National Anthem.
The community-wide campaign to build the new memorial is being led by the City of Mesquite, local veteran groups and the Heroes of Mesquite. Randy Lawson, Heroes of Mesquite President and Founder, said, “We have been raising funds since 2010 for this project. It is wonderful to see the community come together to strengthen the efforts to make a new Mesquite Veterans Memorial become a reality.” Lawson indicated no specific design or location had been selected yet, but was confident this new effort to raise public awareness would generate additional funding and progress on the project.
Event attendees will have the opportunity to make tax-deductible donations by cash, check and credit card. For more information on the event and the campaign, visit www.MesquiteVeteransMemorial.org.
