Notice of public hearing on tax rate

CIty Hall

Mesquite, TX - August 15, 2017 - The City of Mesquite will hold two public hearings on a proposal to increase total tax revenues from properties on the tax roll in the preceding year by 8.6647 percent.  Your individual taxes may increase at a greater or lesser rate, or even decrease, depending on the change in the taxable value of your property in relation to the change in taxable value of all other property and the tax rate that is adopted.

The first public hearing will be held on August 21, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway, Mesquite, TX 75149.

The second public hearing will be held on September 5, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway, Mesquite TX 75149.

The members of the governing body who voted on the proposal to consider the tax increase and how each member voted are as follows:

FOR:  Mayor Stan Pickett, Robert Miklos, Jeff Casper, Bruce Archer, Dan Aleman, Greg Noschese, Tandy Boroughs       

AGAINST:                                        None  

PRESENT and not voting:                None

ABSENT:                                          None

The average taxable value of a residence homestead in the City of Mesquite, Texas last year was $95,254.  Based on last year’s tax rate of $0.687 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed last year on the average home was $654.39.

The average taxable value of a residence homestead in the City of Mesquite, Texas this year is $108,583.  If the governing body adopts the effective tax rate for this year of $0.63222 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be $686.48.

If the governing body adopts the proposed rate of $0.687 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be $745.97.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the hearings and express their views.
