Mesquite makes progress to address illegal fireworks and gunfire

Seized Fireworks by Mesquite-SM

Mesquite, TX – July 10, 2017 – Today, the City of Mesquite announced 46 citations were issued to individuals for the illegal use or possession of fireworks, 725 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized and two individuals were arrested for celebratory gunfire in its community during the July 4th holiday weekend. In Mesquite, it is illegal to possess or use fireworks in the city limits. Fines range from $500 - $4,000. The illegal discharge of a firearm carries the possibility of up to one year in jail.

City Manager Cliff Keheley said, “I am happy with our initial efforts to increase public education and enforcement of illegal fireworks and gunfire. We had a strong presence in the community with messaging, police officers and firefighters. Collectively, we took nearly 900 non-emergency calls for service in regards to fireworks and gunfire. We will evaluate where we can improve and be ready to address this issue again for New Year’s Eve.”

Keheley emphasized this effort did not take away from regular public safety services, as Mesquite Police Dispatch received nearly 1,800 calls for police or fire service during the holiday weekend. In addition, the Mesquite Police Department reported an almost six percent increase in DWI arrests and 131 percent increase in overall citations issued for various offences.

The “Celebrate Safely with Family & Friends, Not Fireworks & Firearms” campaign featured special deployment teams consisting of police officers and firefighters patrolling in neighborhoods.
