Mesquite, TX – June 28, 2017 – This week Mesquite’s Police Department and Fire Department will launch joint deployment teams to enforce the illegal use of fireworks and celebratory gunfire in the city during the July 4th holiday weekend. The public can report violations by calling the police non-emergency number 972-285-6336 or through the Celebrate Safely icon on the city’s mobile app MesquiteTX.
In Mesquite, it is illegal to possess or use fireworks in the city limits. Fines range from $500 - $4,000. The illegal discharge of a firearm carries the possibility of up to one year in jail.
The “Celebrate Safely with Family & Friends, Not Fireworks & Firearms” campaign began earlier in June with the use of outdoor signage and other public education efforts. The public can listen to Police Chief Charles Cato and Fire Chief Mark Kerby discuss the campaign on KEOM’s Community Focus at www.cityofmesquite.com/radio.
