Mesquite, TX - May 23, 2016 – The Mesquite Police Department (MPD) has created a Safe Exchange Zone for citizens to conduct face-to-face sales transactions to help prevent criminal activity. This Safe Exchange Zone is located in the front parking lot of the Mesquite Police Station, 777 N. Galloway Ave. The area is monitored by 24-hour video surveillance, and located in front of the Police Station lobby where an officer is on duty 24 hours a day. The safe zone consists of two clearly marked, reserved parking spaces for citizens to conduct business in a safe environment.
E-commerce through websites such as Craigslist have increasingly been linked to fraud, theft and violent crimes, creating the need for a safer means and location to process transactions. As a result, law enforcement agencies throughout the country are creating safe zones to deter criminal activity.
The MPD encourages all residents to use the Safe Exchange Zone when completing internet transactions, and avoid any transaction if a buyer or seller refuses to meet there. This should minimize risk, and in the unfortunate event that a crime does occur, video footage will be available to assist in identifying suspects and filing criminal charges.
