Mesquite, TX – February 18, 2021 – At the beginning of February, Kay Ward, a disabled Navy veteran and Mesquite resident, received a new roof for free from a Mesquite roofing company, Texas Vets Roofing. Mayor Bruce Archer and Councilmember B.W. Smith, District 5, met with Ward at her home as the new roof was being installed and thanked her for her service.
Mayor Archer said, “It’s a very easy time to feel forgotten. And in Mesquite, Texas we don’t want anyone to feel forgotten, we don’t want anyone to feel left behind. So for a Navy veteran, who served her country with honor and distinction to receive this kind of help when she’s a little bit down, speaks volumes for our community, speaks volumes for the integrity of your [Texas Vets Roofing] business, and it says the kind of people we want to be in Mesquite.”
Ms. Ward served in the U.S. Navy for six and a half years as a ship serviceman. Ward emphasized that she loved her job and loved serving in the Navy, and she would do it all over again if she could. During her last year of service, she started getting severe chronic migraines. She also suffers from nerve damage in her leg, which causes her to fall down a lot.
Unfortunately, finding the extra money to fix her roof has been hard for Ms. Ward. Her roof had gotten to the point where it was leaking in her kitchen, her living room and in three different spots in her bedroom, but she couldn’t find the funds to fix it. That’s when Texas Vets Roofing stepped in to help.
Ms. Ward said, “Every time it rains it was like, where am I going to put the bucket?... It’s going to stop raining in my house and that is a huge relief. I have no words to express everything they’re doing.”
This was the first free roof giveaway of 2021 through the Roof 4 Vets program at Texas Vets Roofing. A portion of all their profits goes towards providing roofs for veterans in need, like Ms. Ward. Their goal for 2021 is to give away one free roof a month, and they have partnered with ABC Supply, who provides the materials, to make this happen.
