Mesquite, TX – April 7, 2020 – The City of Mesquite is accepting applications for the new Mesquite Landmark Commission. The Commission will work to protect, enhance and promote landmarks and districts of historical, cultural and architectural importance in the City. Residents who are interested in being the first members of the commission can apply online at www.cityofmesquite.com/LandmarkCommission. Applications are due by May 1.
“May is National Preservation Month. It’s the perfect time to appoint the very first members of Mesquite’s Landmark Commission,” says Toyia Pointer, the Manager of Historic Preservation. “Serving on the Landmark Commission is a meaningful way for residents to make a positive impact in their community through involvement in revitalization efforts and preservation of our historic resources.”
The Landmark Commission’s responsibilities include researching, initiating and reviewing Mesquite Landmark applications, and making recommendations to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
Applicants with specific technical skills, like architects or engineers, or others with knowledge in the areas of history, historic preservation, education, archaeology, architecture or the arts are needed. Residents with an interest in the history of Mesquite are also invited to apply.
The Landmark Commission was established by City Council, in October 2019, as part of the updated Historic Preservation Ordinance.
