Mesquite, TX – March 31, 2020 – April 1 is National Census Day. While staying home and practicing social distancing, it is a great time to remind Mesquite residents to complete their 2020 Census. Residents can visit https://2020census.gov/ and click “Respond” to start filling out their 2020 Census. Mesquite’s theme to encourage resident participation in the Census is “I Count. You Count. The U.S. Constitution mandates a Census count must be held every 10 years. The data is used to allocate federal dollars which have a direct impact on planning for schools, transportation, health programs and other community needs.
In Mesquite, a one percent undercount in the 2020 Census may result in a loss of more than $3 million in federal funding per year, affecting dozens of programs like Medicare and Medicaid, the Summer Food Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, Veterans housing, Special Education Grants and many other important programs.
Census 2020 is safe and easy to complete. Residents can complete the Census online in 13 different languages. The Census Bureau will also provide support in 59 different languages.
Answers are completely confidential. The Census Bureau is required by law to protect any personal information collected during the census. They cannot release any information about individuals, households or businesses, not even to law enforcement agencies. The law states that the information collected may only be used for statistical purposes.
