Mesquite, TX – March 20, 2020 – The City of Mesquite needs your help to keep drains working during the coronavirus pandemic. Products like toilet paper, wipes and paper towels have flown off store shelves in response to the pandemic. The City is reminding residents not to flush anything but toilet paper down the drain.
Due to the demand of toilet paper, residents may be using wipes more. Since wipes were designed to be strong when wet, almost none of them break down on their way to the wastewater treatment plant, even those that are labeled “flushable.” Because they don’t break down, wipes can get tangled or twisted and caught up in your home plumbing or the sewer system, which can cause a sewage back-up in your home or neighborhood.
We must be vigilant in not flushing them down the toilet and causing severe disruption in the wastewater infrastructure and treatment. Defend Your Drains and throw used wipes in the trash. #NoWipesInThePipes
