Mesquite, TX – February 28, 2020 – More than 50 Mesquite residents came together on Feb. 22 for the Third Annual Neighborhood Summit, hosted by the City of Mesquite’s Office of Neighborhood Vitality. The goal of the yearly summit is to provide information and resources to residents, encourage community engagement and to introduce new engagement tools.
This year’s theme was “Rollin’ Out the Resources” and city staff from multiple departments were at the event to talk to residents and help them learn more about the city resources available to them. This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Janet Johnson, spoke to attendees about positive approaches to social media and how it can be used to highlight community stories.
Speakers and city staff also stressed the importance of community engagement at this year’s Summit. Maria Martinez the Director of Neighborhood Services said, “This year, we are urging residents to be more engaged as we roll out our new Project Porch Light Program. We want people to realize they are part of the solution when it comes to problems in their neighborhood. We are asking our neighbors to engage each other in conversations, to build connections.”
All attendees received a free light bulb to help kick off the new Project Porch Light Program, which encourages the use of exterior lighting, such as front porch lights, to help discourage criminal activity in Mesquite neighborhoods. The program also asks neighbors to build connections with each other, be more engaged and look out for one another and their neighborhood.
