Slama Bama Jama

Slama Bama Jama is the Mesquite Police Department’s international award winning program. The presentations are made during school hours at an assembly in the school gymnasiums to Mesquite Middle School students. Uniformed officers, booming popular music, and black lights start the program off.

A barrage of officers enter the darkened gym bouncing glow-in-the dark basketballs that are luminescent under the specially placed black lights. The officers perform a series of basketball drills including an above the basket tip drill. Varsity basketball players from the five local high schools then enter the gym and put on a high-energy display of their slam-dunking abilities. Next, high school role model students perform a series of skits to convey an anti-gang, anti-drinking/drug, and anti-violence message. Music, a real casket, and student singers help deliver a message about decisions and consequences.

A local police celebrity, who was shot and injured in the line of duty, delivers an appropriate motivational message by sharing his story and the events surrounding his injury. After the finale, the students are invited to come to the gym floor and meet the officers, student actors, and student athletes. The officers and the high school students hand out trading cards and are often requested to autograph them by the young audience.
