The School Resource Officer (SRO) program is a unit of the Staff Support Bureau. All six middle schools, five high schools and a high school disciplinary and intervention center, have a certified law enforcement officer on campus in a cooperative effort between the City of Mesquite and the Mesquite Independent School District.

The primary duties of the SRO are to provide assistance for students, serve as a guest lecturer on a variety of topics, be a spokesperson for the police department and provide security at certain school sponsored events. School Resource Officers participate in special programs designed to improve youth-police relationships and they collectively provide a dynamic middle school presentation in relation to peer pressure, drug and alcohol abuse and gang violence.

School Resource Officers often talk with students without an administrator or parent present during the normal course of their duties. Additional actions that may be taken by the SRO may be to arrest or cite students for fighting, abusive language or any criminal violation. The SROs are also utilized as Bike Officers for special events and during the Holiday Season.
