This short video will assist you in recognizing the hazards that we may face and what you can do to be better prepared.

     Fire! Fire! Fire!

What should I do to be prepared for if a fire occurs in my home? How should I protect my family? The month of October is National Fire Prevention Month which is sponsored annually by The National Fire Protection Agency to promote their slogan, “Stay fire smart! Don’t get burned.” This is done to promote burn awareness and actions that can be taken to prevent these things from happening.

In 2007 alone there were 399, 000 house fires and 2, 900 people were killed. There are certain steps that can be taken to lessen the likelihood that your home will be next. One important thing to have is a smoke detector. If there is smoke in your home, it can alert you that something is wrong and you need to get out! Don’t forget to change the batteries!

It is important to have an escape plan and know the exits that you could possibly use. Make sure there are two exits from every room in case one of the exits is blocked during a fire. If there are family members that cannot get out on their own, plan for how they will get out. Have a planned meeting place outside so that your family can meet there.

The Mesquite Office of Emergency Management in coordination with the Mesquite Fire Department would like to encourage everyone to educate themselves about the hazards of fire. Remember that there is protection through preparedness. Be Ready Mesquite! Please contact the Mesquite Office of Emergency Management at oem@mesquitefire.org if you have any questions or concerns. Stay fire smart! Don’t get burned.
